Broadway stars.

In 1830, the United States has exported stars to Europe. The first notable American actor to make a successful tour was Edwin Forrest, who at age 19, played Othello Yago by Edmond Kean. The second Forrest round in Britain over the next decade has not worked. He was booed offstage. Although the interruption of his tour was a personal dispute with a British actor, his results have been well publicized in the American press, and his return to the American stage was met with populist fervor. This “personal dispute” became an international incident and a demonstration of the class struggle in 1849, when the British actor in question had to report to Astor Place Opera House in New York. A riot occurred on the night of May 10, which was presented with troops and firearms.

First Marquess of Broadway theaters.

In 1891, the first electric marquess was lit on Broadway. The theater was on Madison Square at the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue on West 23rd Street. The Flatiron Building now occupies the site. At the midpoint of the next decade, the street exploded with electrical signals, as each theater announced its shows and stars in the white lights. By the turn of the 20th century, the street looked totally different, with up to sixteen Broadway theaters themselves and many others located on side streets or other thoroughfares. Broadway was more than twelve blocks. It started at 13th Street and headed a mile and a half from the Avenue to 45th Street, which ends in the heart of Long Acre Square. This first decade of the century also saw the construction of many theaters, including New Amsterdam on 42nd Street in 1903, and another four in the same year, which still today.

Our Broadway.

The first decade of the 20th century was both boring and transformational in the history of our Broadway musicals. The seeds of this transformation back to 1882, and the construction of the Madison Square Theater on 24th Street. Mallory, who had built the theater, had employed a young actor-manager from San Francisco with two brothers from the lower Eastside to help To handle the theater. David Belasco, who had the distinction of appearing onstage with another unknown child, Maude Adams, in San Francisco in 1877, would soon become a playwright, owner and builder of a theater. The two brothers of the lower Eastside were, of course, Carlos and Daniel Frohman. The first sign of the transformation came when producer Rudolf Aronson decided to build a suitable theater. At that time, theaters were concentrated between Union Square and 24th Street.
